God’s Kingdom Established with David  L 7


God led His people out of Egypt to the land of Canaan (Judah and Israel) where they took possession of the land God had promised Abraham. For several hundred years, God was  Israel’s leader. He appointed men like Moses to represent him and speak on His behalf. Other men called prophets would also deliver God’s messages to Israel. In some cases, they were sent to other countries, as Jonah went to Nineveh, Assyria.


Israel gets a King

1. What did the neighboring countries have that Israel wanted? (I Samuel 12:12,13) ________

I Samuel 12:12,13 - And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.

13   Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you. 


2. God gave the people a king named Saul. Though disappointed about the people’s request, God promised not to ______________ them for his great name’s sake. (I Samuel 12:22)

I Samuel 12:22 - For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake:

because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.


3. How did God punish King Saul after he disobeyed the commandment of God? (I Samuel 13:13,14) _________________________________________________

God said that the next king would be man after his own ___________. (I Samuel 13:14)

I Samuel 13:13,14 - And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

14  But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.


4. Who did Samuel anoint to be the next king? (I Samuel 16:13) ______________

I Samuel 16:13 - Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.


5. David, the son of Jesse was from the town of ____________________. (I Samuel 16:1)

I Samuel 16:1 - And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.


6. Why did David kill the Philistine giant? (I Samuel 17:46) _____________________________

I Samuel 17:46 - This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.


7. The men of the tribe of ___________ anointed David. (II Samuel 2:4)

II Samuel 2:4 - And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.


An Everlasting Kingdom is Established

8. What did David do after bringing in the ark of the LORD? (II Samuel 6:17,18) ____________

 II Samuel 6:17,18 - And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

18  And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.

The ark of the LORD was a visual reminder of God’s promise to Israel that He would always be their God. He would always lead and protect them.


9. What was in David’s heart to do for God? (II Samuel 7:2,3) ________________________

II Samuel 7:2,3 - That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

3  And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.


10. What did God say he would make for David? (II Samuel 7:11) ______________________

II Samuel 7:11- And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people

Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.


11. God promised to establish the ____________ of his kingdom. (II Samuel 7:12,13)

II Samuel 7:12,13 - And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13  He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.


12. How long would his throne be established? (II Samuel 7:16) _______________________

II Samuel 7:16 - And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.


13. David declared that there is none like God, neither any _____ beside him. (II Samuel 7:22)

II Samuel 7:22 - Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

3  And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:


16. King Solomon was promised that he would be blessed, and the throne of __________ would be established before the LORD _______ _________. (I Kings 2:45)

I Kings 2:45 - And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be

established before the LORD for ever.


17. What did Solomon ask God to give him? (I Kings 3:9) ___________________________

I Kings 3:9 - Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?


18. God gave him a ____________ and understanding heart, as he asked. Also God gave him riches and honor. (I Kings 3:12,13) Solomon was the wisest man to ever live. The Book of Proverbs is a collection of many of his wise sayings.

I Kings 3:12,13 - Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

13  And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.


19. What did Solomon build for the Lord that his father David was not able to build? (I Kings 5:5) _________________________

I Kings 5:5 - And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.


Prophecies regarding the Coming King

20. Psalm 89:3,4 reminds us again of God’s covenant with David, who was his ____________.

Psalm 89:3,4 - I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, 4  Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.


21. God’s people would follow him for a time, then soon rebelled. Many years later, God would use Israel’s enemies to punish them, that they might turn back to him for deliverance. God wanted them to serve him alone and __________ their king. (Jeremiah 30:9)

Jeremiah 30:9 - But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.


22. Another prophet said that a rod out of the stem of ___________, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots, who would smite the earth with the rod of his mouth. (Isaiah 11:1,4)

23. In the prophetical book of Revelation, there is a book in heaven that no one could open. But there was found one who could; he is the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of _________. (Revelation 5:5)

Revelation 5:5 - And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
